Well, I'm moving on. Or rather, my blog is moving to My Freckle: the blog. It will still contain my work and life in photos but hopefully be a little more comprehensive and updated a little more frequently :) Go check it out! I promise you'll like what you see. Thanks, guys.

Nate is graduating from Viewmont High School, and Lisa is graduating from Weber State University. It was lots of fun taking photos of brother and sister! We did a quick shoot in downtown Bountiful, which I think worked out quite well. Congrats, you two :)

Project 365

At the beginning of the year 2010, my friend and I decided to start a blog called Project 365. It was hosted on his website, and we were each to add a photo for the day each day. No fingers pointed and no names mentioned, let's just say we weren't necessarily the best at keeping the blog updated ;) I thought it would be fun to post just a few of my Project 365 photos here in case you never saw them.

Meet the Maxfields

This was my second wedding, and it was especially fun because I got to see the couple through engagement photos, invitation design, and wedding photos. The ceremony took place at the Logan, UT LDS Temple; the reception was held at a ward building in Richmond.

Richard and Tristen are wonderful and make a darling couple! Please let me know what you think of the photos--I need all the help I can get :)

Adventures in Alaska

This post should have also been up about seven months ago. Perhaps there are some advantages to having let it slip past me... oh, the memories!

While visiting my sister Shannon and her husband Ryan in Alaska, their second daughter was born. In fact, Shannon went into labor the day after I arrived and McKenna Sue Moon was born on August 26, 2009.

Even amid the crazy times, we still got out quite a bit. We went to Eklutna Lake, saw the Lion King, visited the glaciers at Portage, went to the Wildlife Conservation Center, toured the Alaska Native Heritage Center, drove through Hatcher's Pass, and just had lots of fun.

Chicago Summer Jam: 7 months later

Many of you know of my experience with Chicago Summer Jam. I went with a group of amazing girls from BYU-Idaho to help out with a 2-week summer camp for girls from inner city Chicago. The girls ranged in age from 9 to 14, and they had surely seen and experienced things I may never experience in my lifetime. It was a chance to love and nurture; it was ultimately a chance to lead by example and help these girls understand that they are worth so much more than what the world tells them.

Through my experience at Summer Jam, I learned so much about myself and how all of us truly are sons and daughters of a loving Heavenly Father. I definitely learned to love on a whole new level. After all, I grew to love a group of 30 girls who were strangers only two weeks prior. I'm so blessed to have gotten to know my fellow counselors too--life long friends for sure!

I have so many great photos, but here are a few that have a more artistic spin, for the sake of this photo blog. I was so surprised when I realized I hadn't already posted photos from Summer Jam. Seven months later, the memories are still as real.

Bannack Round 3

The Custom Images course goes to a ghost town in Bannack, MT each spring and fall semester; this year, students even went during the winter. There were a few extra spots in the vans, so I was fortunate to get to go along. Surprisingly, the weather was amazing!

Below are a few shots from the day. The weird mask that Elissa Stewart so graciously modeled is actually a weaning mask for calves--whenever a calf would try to get milk from its mother, the nails in the mask would poke the cow and cause the cow to not give its calf any milk.

My First Wedding

Saturday, January 23rd marked my first wedding... doing the photography for it, that is ;) The couple had a very traditional Mexican wedding--after their sealing in the Rexburg Temple, they had a huge dinner and dance. It was so culturally different from the receptions I'm used to going to, and it was awesome! The lighting in the event center was almost non-existent at times, so I relied heavily on my flash and diffuser. I was pretty nervous to take this on, but I think it went okay. Let me know what you think.

Havasupai, AZ

Havasupai is a hidden paradise... after all, it takes a 10-mile hike down the Grand Canyon to find the beautiful turquoise waters that you've probably only seen in places like Hawaii. A group of 29 of us made the trek down (drove 12 hours with a stop at the St. George Temple, hiked through the night, and slept for maybe an hour or two after reaching camp) and stayed for three full days.

With temperatures over 100 degrees, it sure was convenient to have so much water to swim in all day every day. The coolest thing to me is the fact that there's an Indian village 8 miles down the canyon! They depend on tourism and frequently use mules and helicopters to get needed supplies to the village.

The village even has a small LDS branch, which was super neat to see the Gospel in such a place :) Check out havasupaitribe.com for more information, and see my Facebook page for more photos. This is definitely a place to go before you die!

My cousin Kim wanted some photos taken of her four kids while they were in town, so I took them up to the Kaysville Botanical Gardens. It's really a beautiful place with lots of neat things for taking photos. This was my first shoot with kids (besides less formal shoots with my niece, of course), and I think it went rather well. All the kids were ready to go by the end and surely made it known in this first photo :)

Shannon, Ryan, and Jaycie came to Utah July 2-12 for Ryan's annual conference in Park City. Because she's so pregnant, Shannon was going to have to stay home with Jaycie. Luckily, the doctor said it was fine for Shannon to travel. We made sure to get some photos of Jaycie while they were here. Jaycie turned 2 on the 4th of July--it was a blast doing fireworks with her! I should have gotten some pictures of that, but I was having too much fun watching the fireworks :)

I designed these for Sister Esplin to use in a display in the Spori Building at BYU-Idaho, so watch for them in the coming weeks! I haven't seen the final printed versions yet, so I hope they turn out as they appear on the screen. I'm most excited for the temple print, because it's so large and will be put in a beautiful black frame.

These photos were taken in Ririe, ID. The last one is Joe's Metal & Design workshop. While I was shooting around the shop, Joe himself walked out of the shop. I wish I would have been daring enough to ask to take photos of him! He was dressed in a denim mechanic's outfit with a red bandana around his neck; his skin was super tan, and his hair was gray/white with lots of tight curls. Talk about an incredible environmental portraiture opportunity that I was just too shy to take advantage of :) Anyway, please let me know what you think of my photos. Thanks!

HDR -- My First Attempt

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. I took three shots--one with the correct exposure, one over exposed, and one under exposed. Different parts of the photo were captured correctly at the different exposures; for example, on the over exposed photo, there was incredible detail in the clouds yet no definition in the dark foreground. Thus, HDR takes the best parts of each image and combines them into one. You can even give the resulting photo this cool surreal look--let me know what you think! (This was done using the free trial of the Dynamic Photo software.)

The photos below are from my first experience doing family portraits. Please provide me with any suggestions you might have. On this shoot I realized the importance of all the little details--hand placement, the position of objects behind the subjects, etc. I learned it's good to take lots and lots of photos since it's not too often that every single person is looking at the camera, eyes open and smiling, at the same time. When you do capture that shot, however, it's sweet! (Otherwise it's on to Photoshop to swap heads or something.) I'm not huge into Photoshop with portraits, so the only edits I've made are slight adjustments to levels, hue/sat, blur, and burned edges. Enjoy :)

Revising a Project... and a Product

The teacher I TA for has asked me and the other TA to help re-design her Project 2 Case Study for Advanced Visual Media. Previously it had been a group project in which each group would select a product and demographic from a pre-determined list. Now, the entire project will be on an individual basis with the opportunity to choose any product for package re-design.

This is what I've done so far:

This is the current label that signifies that a certain Campbell's soup is part of its Healthy Request soups. Although Healthy Request isn't its own product line, Campbell's brands several of its Select Harvest, Chunky, and Condensed soups as such. Maybe it's just me, but these bright green and yellow don't say "health"; therefore, I decided to re-design the Healthy Request label and brand the soups as their own product line at the same time.

This is the final label re-design with which I'll wrap an actual soup can. The project has consumed so much of my time lately, but it's really fun and will hopefully be a good portfolio piece! I had to re-draw the Nutrition Facts label and take some pretty sweet soup pics to get this one you see on the label.

Next I'm onto taking professional photos of the new product and then the advertising--a billboard, print ad, web ad, etc. I'll be sure to post those when I'm done with them. Until then, let me know what you think. Do you agree that this packaging retains the Campbell's brand equity while looking a bit healthier?

Carlee and I found a little ghost town out on Poleline Road in Rexburg--who would've thought this was so close to us? There were springs from mattresses, lots of broken glass, and some really neat buildings/windows to take photos by... not to mention a sweet truck that had been shot at a few times. Luckily we didn't find any surprises and made it out alive ha ha. (I haven't had time to go through all the photos, but here are a few super quick edits.)

This poster is one I designed for advertising around campus.

Yellow Page Ad Contest

My advertising class had the assignment to enter this Yellow Page ad competition for our Communication Day. There was a 30-page case study from which we had to pull necessary details (like maps, phone numbers, and so on). Hopefully I included everything! I really enjoy doing freelance work for friends and family. This is a postcard I did for my friend Lindsey. One of their wedding colors was green, so that's why we went with the green. It helped to have very professional photos to work with (Sweet Memory Garden did their photos).

Bannack Round 2

This semester I'm a TA (teacher's assistant) for a few of Sister Esplin's classes.... that means I got to go to the Montana ghost town Bannack once again! As always, the lighting was absolutely beautiful. Surprisingly, most of the photos I took were portraits. Here are a few of the photos I've begun to edit. (I know the focus in the third portrait isn't all that sharp, but I really liked the colors and composition.)

Just after 8 a.m. one cloudy day, I decided to go take some photos of the temple that would soon be dedicated. They turned out great. Can you believe that it's even more beautiful on the inside? Because of President Hinckley's passing, the dedication was rescheduled from Feb. 3 to Feb. 10. However, the cost to reprint all materials would've been too much; everything (custom handkerchiefs at Deseret Book, programs for the dedication service, etc.) all remained the same.

Wherever I go, I can't help but take macro flower shots. The cactus flower shots were taken quick in some alley as we left Old Town. The purple flower is near the Atlantis ride at Sea World--we waited a good 20 minutes for that thing to get fixed, so I had to do something to keep me busy :)
